I'd just like to update this *ahem* 5 star review with some odd information....
I'm being harassed about writing it!
By theoretical employees of ArtBeat no less. Maybe yes, maybe no. I'll find out when I call ArtBeat tomorrow to find out if they know they've got people on yelp alienating their clientele!
Caveat emptor- that shit is bananas.

If you are looking for great colorist and a charming Aveda-concept salon in the East Bay, I would recommend checking out this salon.
I've been here a few times to have my hair colored and have been impressed each time. Charlene has a good sense of what works best for my hair type and the style I want. I bring in my usual magazine clippings of hair color I like and she'll suggest a few possibilities that suit me. Since finding the right colorists and stylist has never been an easy experience for me and now that I found someone, I want to recommend her to anyone still out there searching or wanting to try someone new.
The salon itself is tastefully decorated, the staff is friendly, and carries a full line of Aveda products. It was easy to get an appointment that matched my work schedule since a few nights a week they take early evening appointments. If you drive, parking is pretty easy on a nearby side street off Solano Avenue.
Also I love the idea that the salon supports local artists by showing their work and hosting an opening night for them. It adds a nice touch to the whole experience. I would check out the website to see when they have gallery opening nights. It's a great opportunity to view some wonderful art and to check out the salon.

I don't get my hair cut that often because I am basically too lazy to drag my ass to the salon AND I wear my hair in a pony tail 99% of the time. I was finally up for a change and decided to try Artbeat after reading all of the reviews. Try (who is a new talent at the salon) gave me a great cut and great advice on my coarse, wavy, hard to manage hair.
The location is great, the street parking was pretty easy and the salon was clean and nicely decorated.
I will definitely call to see Try in the very near future.

I came here with my girlfriend awhile back and waited for her while she got her hair cut. They offered me tea and a Star Magazine while I waited. Girlfriend was really happy with her hair cut and overall experience so I decided to go back and try it for myself. I'm not going to even mention the names of the stylists we saw because from what I can see, they are running a top rate business and everyone I could see was busy and seemingly friendly and professional. My 5 star review is based on my overall impression of this business in general.
Additional Comment: Worth the drive from Oaktown. I'll be back.
I went there for my wedding. Kristin did my hair and Leilana my make up. Everything was like I wanted. Nothing more, nothing less. They both listened very carefully and did a great job.
Kristin is very fast and working with you patiently to finish the way you want.
Leilana is a perfectionist. I never like make up and always hesitate to have it done, because mostly people over do it. I wanted a natural look . When she finished I could hardly say that there was make up; and, I definetely looked much better.
I strongly recommend both of them.

It appears that two other postings have positive things to say about Leilana, but unfortunately I have some not so hot things to say. I picked out Leilana on the Artbeat website, thinking she seemed interesting and afforable.
I brought along four photos of haircuts for inspiration, and we talked about them. When I described what I wanted (which was basically a choppy, funky layered out of the ordinary cut), she seemed receptive and it seemed like she was listening.
Unfortunately, the experience proved that she wasn't actually listening, since the haircut I ended up with definitely did not match our discussion. My hair was just down to my shoulders when I arrived, and she cut it extremely short in the back; way more a-line than we discussed (I told her that I did not want to lose all of the length). I had to have her go back and fix the bangs- we discussed spiky and funky, she gave me straight.
In addition, the layering and overall even aspect of the cut were off. After she finished, she mentioned something along the lines of "of, yea, and I cut it shorter in the back and on top [it's a haircut which goes forward, kind of piled on top] because it didn't look right." I really liked Leilana personally; she seemed like a fun and truly nice person, but as far as my haircut goes, unfortunately it seemed less like it "didn't look right," and more like 'I wasn't experienced enough to give you exactly what we discussed'. Maybe she was having a bad day, I don't know- I only know it was completely not what I asked for- it was practically a boy cut. My point is not to badger but just to hope that Leilana improves, so that others do not have to leave so disappointed.
Sometimes, it's worth it to pay a bit more for a haircut, and go to someone who is more experienced and skilled.

Last week I had a great experience at Artbeat Salon. They have moved into lovely spacious premises opposite their old address. The front desk staff are friendly and welcoming and the use Aveda products which are all-natural and great for my skin.
Christina is a new staff member there and she gave me a great facial and also worked on my hands and feet. She worked on my back, found and loosened knots that made me feel as if I was walking on air later. She has a warm approach to people, and is a loving care giver. The room was small and comfortable, with candles and refreshing scents. Music was barely audible, but relaxing. As she worked, she made me feel pampered and blissed-out. I felt I got a high-class service from a skilled practitioner.

ATTENTION CURLY GIRLS: SEE HILARY FOR THE BEST CUT EVER
I have ridiculously curly, kinky, dry, mixed girl hair that has never had a good haircut or been healthy. I finally met someone who can do my hair at Keter salon on day and she changed my life. Unfortunately she moved to England, but I found her spawn: Hilary. She took Hilary under her wing and taught her everything she knows and Hilary has worked with me ever since. She knows exactly what to do with my hair and it has never been healthier. Before, my hair was my worst enemy. Now, it is one of my best assets. Hilary knows how to cut, color, and style my hair like no one (she's even better than her teacher!). Please go see this woman, not only is she an amazing stylist, but she's cool as hell!

My boyfriend and I have been seeing Noel at Artbeat for several years, and we trust him implicitly. Which is why, after a couple of years of asking for (and receiving) fairly conservative cuts, I told him yesterday that I was ready to go fairly short and that he could do whatever he wanted.
Noel gave me, without a doubt, the best, most fun, and certainly the coolest cut I have ever received. Not only is it modern, but it is still professional for my office job and is super low maintenance day to day.
Thanks, Noel! We love ya!

I suggest seeing Leilana. When I went, she did exactly what I wanted and clearly cared about perfection in the cut and the style. For those of us who have a budget but still want to look good, Leilana will deliver.
UPDATE: Sarah's moved away, but Leilana rocks! I just got a great cut and had my unibrow waxed while there, and it was a very relaxing experience! I love the new location, and everyone is so nice. Yay for Artbeat!
I came to Artbeat after deciding that Aveda salons are for me.... I try to not spend too much on products, but I love their philosophy. I got a cut from Sarah on a scorching hot day. For one, she is totally sweet, really listened to me and made me feel comfortable. I'm getting into that demographic where looking in the mirror can be a little of a shock, but I felt great when I left. No huge changes, just a really great trim and cleanup. She also recommended some really kickass products, but I didn't feel pressured to spend a lot of money. I felt the price was reasonable and the vibe in the salon was great. I'll be back!

Horrible! I went to Tito after reading all the great reviews about him. I wished I never went! First, he made me wait an hour before seeing me. Then he took forever to cut my hair. And it's not like he talks... he's just slow! Then my haircut was horrible. He tried to style it and since it wouldn't do what he wanted it to do, he kinda left it as it. When I left, I looked like I had hat hair. Very disappointed!

hilary is a-MAZING! I'm trying to grow my hair really long, but I haven't been the best too it... meaning, I've done everything you're not suppose to do when trying to grow long healthy locks... bleached, colored, not trimmed regularly... anyways, needless to say, I was kind of embarrassed of how badly my hair was looking, and I was super nervous that I would have to cut off a lot more than I wanted to. I went to Hilary based on fantastic recommendations and I am the happiest I've been in a very long time! I had a slight disconnection, but didnt know where to go from there, plus my bangs have been an issue... she gave me everything I was looking for plus some ideas on growing out the bangs and how to grow out my current haircut to something super nice. I would recommend anyone and everyone to hilary. She's super nice, great style, and knows her stuff! Whether it be a fabulous creative cut or creative color, she knows what will good on you and for your lifestyle. TOP NOTCH!

I am so pleased and excited about my new find. This salon is great and friendly, most of all I was lucky enought to find Genevieve who did an excellent color job on my know-to-be-diffifcult hair. I brought a picture in with me and she did EXACTLY what I was looking for. Note to all blondes: she's your woman!!! No brassiness and made it look natural. I walked out of the salon feeling like a new woman! Genevieve was awesome and I can't say enough about her as a stylist!!!

I got an A-line bob with Sarah and let me just say that she is fab! She's a great conversationalist...I definitely did not have to sit through any of those awkward hair cut silences.
Anyways...a few days after my original cut, I went back in to get an adjustment and Sarah was wonderful about it. I was actually surprised to hear her say that she was happy I came back in, which I definitely did not expect.
Regarding the adjustment, the original cut was great, but I wasn't specific enough and it was my fault for not saying I wanted the bob a bit shorter the first time around. She was completely accommodating and great, listened to my critique, and now a month later, I still get compliments on my semi-new cut!

I have to say that this review is long overdue and I wish I could remember the name of my stylist because she was awesome. This was my first experience at an AVEDA salon and I don't think I'll ever go to a non-Aveda salon again.
My friend and I went here to get drastic changes to our hair. I had bangs cut and she had her hair cut into a short bob and coloured. We went with the cheaper option of just going with the regular hairdressers rather than the more experienced ones and all I have to say is that if this is supposed to be baseline, the more experienced ones must be incredible.
Both our haircuts turned out wonderful and the aromatherapy massage beforehand was truly relaxing. They play great music and are happy to let you sit and relax without incessantly talking your ear off. While it wasn't the cheapest cut (50$) it was an amazing deal considering the quality of the cut and the products that are used. Even if you go to the bottom-of-the-rug places you still end up paying 20-30$ for just a measly trim in Berkeley. This place is worth the extra expenditure.
The salon was immaculate, the people really friendly, overall a great vibe, made you want to stay and hang out afterwards. They also got a plus in my book because they were recycling the clippings from the haircuts to be used in the Bay clean up after the oil spill.
Really, if you're looking for a great cut + a great experience, this is the place to go.

Every two to three years I get a drastic haircut. I go from long to short in just a matter of seconds. This is the third occasion in which I have done this, and let me tell you it is an experience that is on the verge of being spiritual. Spiritual in a hair sense of course. Some people are scared of taking the plunge, but I truly live for it. So obviously for an event as important as this I really wanted something good. For days I diligently researched the salons in my area on Yelp, and checked out their websites. My final choice was the Artbeat Salon, because of the good reviews and qualified stylists. I called them up this morning to see if I could make an appointment today. I told them my situation and asked for them to recommend someone. The person on the phone recommended Noel, and to make a long story short, he gave me an absolutely fabulous haircut. He listened to the list of things I wanted and somehow managed to satisfy all my requests in a truly fantastic fashion. Noel really did a great job at addressing all of my requests as well as what would work best for me. I now have a hairdo that is not only functional, but also super chic. Thank you Noel!

Fantastic! Great Price! Great Atmosphere! Friendly people! Wonderful products and treatment!
I tried Artbeat today for the first time. I have been going to Cowboys and Angels in San Fransisco for several years, but I recently moved to Berkeley and I finally decided to try a new place. Now, I figured C&A was going to be really hard to beat... but Artbeat did! Not only did my stylist, Sarah G., do a fantastic job, but she gave me a wonderful scalp massage before the even more enjoyable shampoo and conditioner massage! The Aveda products are fantastic and she helped me find a good product for my curly hair. She did EXACTLY what I wanted and my hair looks fabulous. I will DEFINITELY be going back to see Sarah.
If you live in the East Bay (or even if you don't!) you should try Artbeat Salon!

After years of returning to my old neighborhood in SF (lower haight) every time I needed a haircut, I finally found the courage to check out a salon closer my new home (berkeley). I chose artbeat based on the stellar reviews it received here on yelp, and I was not disappointed.
Everyone who works at artbeat seems very friendly and down to earth. I really felt welcomed into their salon. After a couple of great experiences, I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing haircut/style experience. The ambiance at artbeat is soothing and they give you a scalp massage with special oils before cutting your hair. The stylists really listen to what you say you want and are very forthcoming with information about how to care for your hair without being pushy with products. It's a pretty awesome place.

I just had Sarah Gooch for a bang trim. I wasn't able to explain exactly what I wanted- but instead knew what I didn't want. The bangs I had before were heavy and disappointing- but Sarah was able to reshape and wisp them up abit! She was very good at catching onto what I was looking for, and I walked out with a whole new look in a very short time! I will definitely see her again when it is time for a full hair cut!!! Also, the products here are awesome, and the environment is friendly and laid back- not too stuffy like many upscale salons!

I highly recommend Genevieve! Not only was the haircut great, but so was the entire experience. She took her time, began with a head massage, and was very friendly. The salon itself was very nice; small, intimate, with cool people; I think they're moving to a bigger a space, though. The price was reasonable for what I've seen thus far in the Bay area. I will definitely be back!

I have lived in the East Bay off and on for almost fifteen years, and I have tried a lot of hair salons, both here and in the city. Artbeat is by far the best. Let Noel cut and color your hair ,and you won't be disappointed. He is talented, sweet and patient. He really takes the time to listen to you and what you want, and does his absolute best to make you happy. He has saved my hair from an experimental Victoria Beckham-like bob (mistake!) in record time. And while you're there, get your waxing done by Irene. She gives great brow, and her bikini waxes are fairly painless and thorough. She also does a nice job of waxing for pregnant women, with special pillows and everything. Finally, she helped me with some on-target make-up consulting. My skin has improved greatly since starting to work with her.

Noel is the best! He has been slowly nursing me off of a dreadful red-ish dye job (from a previous hairdresser who insisted I go red), and I gotta say the last incarnation is just fabulous. I even got stopped on the street today by some random person, asking who did my hair - the best compliment ever!
Noel really takes the time to listen, and has successfully steered me towards a cut / color that is subtly edgy and pretty. And his chairside manner is down-to-earth and pleasant.
Thank you Noel!

Treating the tresses is an expensive and time-consuming process. I'd rather not have a tally at the end of my life listing the hours I've spent sitting in salons, flat-ironing, blow drying, washing and otherwise tending to the locks (and I really don't spend that much time compared to some ladies). That being said, I was treated to a great experience (replete with hand massage and free samples) and emerged with beautifully colored, carefully coifed hair after Sara G worked her magic. Artbeat is an Aveda salon, a must for me, as I like their all-natural, high quality products. The space is rather small, but I was told they will be relocating to a new location just across the street.
More on the hair: Sara G. is absolutely meticulous!! She's also a color intuitive and managed to bring back my natural, ashy blonde hair after my summertime bout with brighter blond. She turned my hair into glimmering, sleek sophistication while sticking to my natural color. I feel very happy to have finally found a stylist who actually LISTENS and schedules time for both a color and a cut, rather than a hasty trim despite my appointment for a cut.

This place is amazing! I've had my hair cut by Noel twice now and both times I have walked out with a stellar cut. I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair before this. Besides being extremely charming, Noel really takes his time in helping you to decide the best cut for your hair. He's great at taking your wants into account but also gives helpful advice on what would look good (and not so good.) He gives great head massages too and the Aveda products are wonderful!

Nice salon, but I had a very unsatisfactory experience. In fact, it was awful. I left with my hair fried, pretty much in ruins, and wanting to cry. I read other great reviews for genevieve, so maybe just specify that you don't want her to put bleach in your hair, especially if you have dark hair. I looked horrible afterwards, and they actually let me leave the salon like that!
IF YOU HAVE DARK HAIR AND WANT TO LIGHTEN IT, DO NOT LET ANYONE PUT BLEACH IN YOUR HAIR!!! I also would NOT recommend genevieve for lightening dark hair. (other reviews are helpful if this is not the case, since she gets rave reviews for everything else)
Also note: They apparently charge by the hour (which they don't tell you when you make an appointment or ask about prices) so if you go in for a color job, it won't cost $70+ depending on experience but will start there, or more if it is an "experienced stylist."
It will be $75 PER HOUR that you are getting your hair colored!
The quotes/prices on their website is misleading because they charge way more than that.
UPDATE: After leaving my post, the owner contacted me and offered free services to make up for the bad experience I had. It was a nice offer, but I'm still traumatized, so I won't be going back, and that offer still won't give me back my hair, my time and money lost, or that boost of self-confidence when you look in the mirror because your hair looks fabulous-- mine obviously doesn't and it wasn't worth all the money or the stress. Seriously, it's not worth it-- just love your dark hair. It was A LOT of money just to ruin my hair and have a bad experience.

The two stars are for the customer service and friendliness of the staff. Otherwise my experience at this salon was far from acceptable.
I had a maintenance cut here on a short length style that I've had for more than a year. It has been several days since my haircut and little 'tufts' of hair are sticking out in random directions and for some reason my stylist cut portions of hair on the top of my head so short that it sticks straight up.
This is not what I requested and I suggest that you go to another salon where they have higher standards in their hiring practices so you won't have to worry if the stylist that you get will do the same to you.

I had been meaning to post a review since I got my haircut in January. I scheduled an appointment with Tito after reading the great reviews on him. I am very glad I did. I don't know where I got the courage to chop off my hair...I went from waist length hair to chin length hair! As soon as I got in the chair Tito made me feel ready for my transformation. He had really good advice about what style I should get and assured me it would look great. I love my "empowering bob".
I have to send a huge Yelp out to Tracy at Art Beat! She's phenomenal! I'm new to the area and have trusted the same stylist for many years, so going somewhere new was a bit nerve-wracking. When I walked in the door of Art Beat, however, I knew I had arrived at the right place. I had chosen Tracy based on other reviews I read, and they were spot on. She's a great, easy going gal with huge talent in the color, cut & style department! Such a relief to find someone new who I hope will be my stylist for years to come!

I do a lot of online research (restaurants, etc) and as most people know, it doesn't always work out. I felt I needed a new do and was looking for a place that had a reputation for quality service. I was impressed with Artbeat's rating and decided to give it a try.
When I called I wasn't sure who to ask for because all of the stylists received high ratings. They told me that Noel would be my stylist. His bio portion on the salon's website claims that he is "especially skilled at listening to each client's needs and fashioning a hairstyle that will fit their lifestyle."
So true. I highly recommend him.
I went in there needing a change but nothing too drastic (at least for now). He cut my hair exactly as we discussed and gave me confidence in returning at a later date to perhaps take the next step (a more drastic cut). He has an eye for what works and is incredibly skillful. He's also extremely nice and a great conversationalist.
If you want need a cut and style - see Noel.

Went to Yelp when I needed a new stylist and I'm so glad I did. Tracy at Artbeat gave me the best cut I've had in ages. I sort of knew what I wanted, and she was willing to listen, but she also added in some of her own suggestions. She ran everything by me and only did what I was comfortable with. The result was what I wanted, taken to the next level. The salon was clean and every cut I saw finished was awesome. I am going back in October for a cut and highlight with Tracy.
UPDATE:
I got braver this time and asked Tracy to give me a much more drastic, short cut than I've had in probably a decade. It turned out so well. I have never gotten more compliments on my hair than I'm getting now. I also decided to do some highlights and they weren't at all "stripey" as so many highlight jobs are. They look perfectly natural. In fact, my husband can't even tell I got highlights, he just thinks my hair looks "shinier" than ever before.
I'm hooked. I"m definitely seeing Tracy from now on.
UPDATE: 4/16/2008: I love Artbeat, but Tracy has now moved on to a new salon and I have to follow her bc no one does my hair and highlights like Tracy. She's now at Vine Street Salon: www.vinestreetsalon.com.

Thank you Artbeat and Sarah! The 2 cuts I had previous were horrendous, leaving me to do nothing to my hair for 6 months. I couldn't wait any longer and had been to Artbeat for an amazing facial and liked the atmosphere. So I gave it a shot. They chose Sarah for me and it couldn't have been a better match. She listened to what I wanted and didn't want. She gave me the best haircut I've had in years, and I have bangs, layers...the whole works. And the price...SUPER! I couldn't be happier.
(sigh). well, i received a critique of my review, mainly because it called out a certain stylist. to wit: "I feel as though having issues with a business is one thing (so, comments about Artbeat itself for example...), but commenting about a particular stylist is a completely different story. Don't forget, this person makes their living this way!"
true, so true, but i find it meaningless to review a salon without reviewing the stylist. i have nothing of interest to mention about artbeat as a salon. every other review of artbeat includes a specific mention of the stylist. most comments are gushingly positive, and this is allowed, but my comments were a bit catty, and this is not considered polite, no matter how relevant and true those comments may be. however, in an effort to play nice and ensure good karma, i have revised my review and replaced the actual name of my stylist with a pseudonym. anyone who wants more information about my experience with said stylist is welcome to send me a message. the altered version of my original review follows:
********************************************
boooo. i was not feeling the love from *star* yesterday. but let me start at the beginning. years ago i had very short, kinda butch hair, i mean really cropped. the look was fine while it lasted, but i have been growing it out for the past 2 or 3 years. i am lucky if my hair grows 3 millimeters a month, so getting a haircut is an exciting semiannual event for me and i was really looking forward to the experience at this highly recommended salon.
*star* frustrated me because *star* did everything by the book. there is nothing i can actually bitch about technically, but we had no chemistry. *star* started with a nice scalp and shoulder massage, the shampoo felt good of course, but *star*looked bored the whole time. kinda sullen. we each made feeble attempts at small talk, but like a bad date, we really had nothing to say to each other. long story short, i left with a decent haircut but not the STYLE i longed for. should i blame that on *star*? is my lack of style my own fault, really? probably, but i am still not going back.

I use to get my eyebrows waxed at a nail salon, only to have have my skin ripped off until someone suggested I see Irene at Pure Beauty. Since then she has left Pure Beauty and is now at Artbeat Salon which I did not hesitate to follow her. She does a great job on my brows and I faithfully see her every 2 weeks. I found artbeat on yelp and I am happy i did. I used to be one of those people who went to supercuts because I was too cheap to spend money on a good haircut. That is before I realized how good a "good haircut" can be.
I love the Aveda salons. All the products are natural, they don't pressure you to constantly dye your hair, and get this: they listen to what kind of haircut you want!!! My favorite part is that they don't use razors unless you request it (which made my hair frizzy and left me looking like Tarzan's wife!).
The people here have experience and know how to cut hair. It is worth the $60. To give you an idea about the experience the stylists have my friends commented on my haircut that it looked so natural and fitted me so well they didn't even notice I had a hair cut....so yeah.
For a personal suggestion, take an hour off of lunch from work and get your hair cut. If only it was everyday I could get a head massage, and walk out looking amazing!! Talk about stress reliever!

Dear Lady's and gentlemen,
First off I want to clear something up... to miss flat haired Michelle w. who went and saw Tito the other day!!! That really sucks that you had to wait for an hour... but to insult him by the way he cuts hair is total not true!!! If anything he is phenomenal at cutting all variety of different textured hair. I have very thick, curly textured hair and he cut ts it perfectly even without having to straighten it out. I have died my hair from platinum blond, with purple and pink to natural red, brown with blond tips, to jet black... he can do it all!!!
Also he has been cutting my mothers hair which is long, thick with straight hair.
I have seen him do many different hair cuts from men to woman with out a problem... bowel cuts to asermetual layers... I have been going to Tito since i was 16 years old for a birthday present.... now 20 and now being on tour with my singing career its really hard to find other hair dressers i trust!! so If you are in the neighborhood and need a trim or a make over go to Tito!!!
When ever i am in town I go to see Tito.... Not only is he my hair dresser but over the years he has become my very close friend and he looks at me as his little sister. So to hear that he wasn't friendly to you Michelle is very surprising... Maybe you came in with very negative energy with a very negative light...
love,
Kara
Tracy Tracy Tracy! She's awesome. She can take me from full-on rocker mullet to work-worthiness and back again. Great at color as well, and I've never had a problem booking an appointment at the last minute.

Tracy is a great stylist. She has excellent instincts and really takes her time to get it right. My husband has commented on my haircut several times - this is unprecedented behavior for him. I just found out, though, that Tracy left Artbeat and now works at Vine Street Salon in the Gourmet Ghetto area. I'm glad she made the move - it's not that much farther and it's a nicer, airier space (with better neighborhood food choices for a post-cut snack).
